About Us

Scouting in this part of Cheshire goes right back to the birth of the Movement. Crewe was one of the first towns in the Country to form a Scout Troop after General Baden-Powell visited on 23rd January 1908 to explain his idea of Scouting at a ‘public meeting’ in the old Co-op Hall.

Since those early beginnings, Scouting in this region has continued to thrive and South West Cheshire is one of the largest and most successful Scouting areas in the country. We have achieved continuous growth over the years due to the extensive range of adventurous activities on offer to all our Scouting sections.
SW Cheshire has a total of 25 Groups and 5 Explorer Units spread across our District covering areas around Crewe, Nantwich, Audlem, Wybunbury, Bunbury, Elworth, Haslington, Wheelock, Wrenbury, Shavington, Brereton, Sandbach and Wychwood.

The 38th South West Cheshire Scout group, based in Nantwich, is comprised of a Beaver colony (ages 6 – 8), a cub pack (ages 8-10), a hugely popular scout pack (ages 10-14). With such a jam-packed organisation, meetings are held most weeknights where our members are encouraged to enjoy a wide range of activities, either at our new home at Nantwich Youth & Community Centre, Birchin lane, Nantwich; or regularly at Milldale Campsite. We are a multicultural and diverse group with both Boys and Girls attending.

Milldale is South West Cheshire’s District Scouts own campsite. Set in 28 acres of secluded countryside near Crewe it is open to all members of the Scouting and Guiding fraternity. A stream, five acres of mature woodland and a seven acre camping field make Milldale an ideal location for traditional troop and patrol camping activities.

Other activities include Skiing, Canoeing, Archery, Rifle Shooting, Swimming and competing in challenging outdoor events such as the gruelling Cheshire Hike, where this year we are proud to say that Nantwich came 2nd in the county and first in the district! International camps such as Chamboree held in Cheshire every 4 years

The 38th have always been linked to Nantwich Parish Church (every scout wears this name with pride on their uniform), however a recent initiative has been undertaken to ensure a closer collaboration is maintained in the future. This will include greater involvement in each other’s activities and sharing resources in the spirit of helping each other and enhancing our community as a whole.

With increasingly longer waiting lists, more adult support is called for. The dedication already conveyed by our leaders and help from volunteers with scheduled meetings and events is truly fantastic – but we desperately need more to keep going, become stronger and to take some of the load off our regular supporters. Any extra help would be gratefully received and can be hugely rewarding to all concerned.
